Usually not — but the answer depends on what the Comptroller considers you to be selling. Texas does not tax professional services. It does tax data processing, and it taxes 80% of that charge. A bookkeeping engagement can fall on either side of that line depending on how the work is described and delivered.

Unlike goods, a service in Texas is taxable only if it appears on the statutory list. Bookkeeping is not on that list. Data processing is.
When a charge is data processing, Texas exempts 20% of it and taxes the remaining 80%. On a $1,000 monthly fee at an 8.25% combined rate:
About $66 a month — roughly $792 a year on a single engagement. Which is why the classification is worth getting right rather than assuming.
The distinction is not the software you use — nearly every bookkeeper uses software. It is whether the customer is buying judgment or buying the entry of data.

Note what this means: the same monthly work can be described two ways, and the description influences the result. That is not a loophole — it is a reason to describe the engagement accurately, in writing, before a question ever arises.
One combined monthly fee covering several different services can pull the whole charge toward the taxable treatment.
The practical protection is the same one that protects a repair shop: state the separate services separately, and keep the engagement letter consistent with the invoice.
Two things worth checking on your own books. First, whether any provider is charging you sales tax on a service fee — and if so, on what basis. Second, whether you have been paying it without ever asking.
Sales tax charged in error is still money out of your account. And a provider who cannot explain the basis for the charge has probably not thought about it.
The reverse also happens: a business receives a service it should have accrued use tax on and did not. Both directions surface in an audit.
Why we know this
Service taxability is one of the least understood areas of Texas tax and one of the most commonly assessed. The businesses that come through it cleanly are the ones whose paperwork said the same thing the whole way through.
