Catch-Up Bookkeeping for Businesses That Are Behind

Cleanup corrects inaccurate books; catch-up brings missing periods current. Many projects need both.

Reviewed August 2026 · Mint Associates Ltd Co · Houston, Texas

How it works

The rule, and what it turns on.

Start from the last reliable reconciliation and rebuild forward from bank/card statements, payroll, loans, prior returns and other records. The goal is a supportable balance sheet, not merely zero uncategorized transactions.

Example

An 18-month cleanup reconstructs transfers, loans, owner activity and duplicates, then reconciles each month through current.

Common mistakes

What we see go wrong, and what we do instead.

  • Starting with current month while opening balances are wrong.
  • Deleting transactions to force reconciliation.
  • Plugging differences to expense.

A better approach

  • Reconstruct from statements when detail is missing and document limitations.

Authority
