How Does an S Corporation K-1 Affect My Form 1040?

How it works

The rule, and what it turns on.

K-1 income is not the same as distributions. Separately stated items can flow to different schedules and can be limited by shareholder basis and other rules.

Example

$80,000 ordinary income plus $2,000 charitable contribution on K-1 are reported separately; a $30,000 cash distribution is analyzed under basis.

Common mistakes

What we see go wrong, and what we do instead.

  • Reporting only cash received.
  • Netting all K-1 items together.

A better approach

  • Maintain a shareholder basis file alongside K-1 preparation.

Authority

Where this comes from, so you can check it.
