How Does Owning an S Corporation Affect My Personal Tax Return?

Owning an S corporation can affect Form 1040 through W-2 wages, K-1 items, basis, health insurance, estimated tax and distributions.

Reviewed August 2026 · Mint Associates Ltd Co · Houston, Texas

How it works

The rule, and what it turns on.

Shareholders generally report allocated income whether or not cash is distributed, and losses can be limited by basis/at-risk/passive rules.

Example

$60,000 W-2 plus $40,000 K-1 income both affect the 1040; a $25,000 distribution is analyzed separately under basis rules.

Common mistakes

What we see go wrong, and what we do instead.

  • Equating K-1 income with cash distributions.
  • Ignoring Form 7203.

A better approach

  • Coordinate corporate and individual returns in the same year-end process.
