How Is 1099-K Income Reported?
Form 1099-K reports gross payment-settlement activity; it does not determine taxable income by itself.
How it works
The rule, and what it turns on.
Merchant fees, refunds, personal transfers and duplicated sales reporting must be reconciled to the books.
Example
Processor reports $120,000 gross and withholds $4,000 fees; books generally show $120,000 sales and $4,000 merchant fees, not $116,000 sales.
Common mistakes
What we see go wrong, and what we do instead.
- Adding 1099-K to sales already recorded.
- Reporting net deposits as gross sales.
A better approach
- Use a processor clearing account and reconcile to 1099-K.
