What Is Form 2848 Power of Attorney?
Eligible practitioners can represent a taxpayer before the IRS when properly authorized on Form 2848 and within their practice rights.
How it works
The rule, and what it turns on.
The form specifies tax matter and periods and differs from an information-only Form 8821.
Example
An EA authorized for 2023-2025 Form 1040 matters can discuss and act on those matters within the authorization.
Common mistakes
What we see go wrong, and what we do instead.
- Using 8821 for representation.
- Vague matter/period entries.
A better approach
- Use CAF-authorized Form 2848 and keep scope narrow to actual engagement.
